What mom doesn’t like diamonds?  Well, if you have an elementary or high school age student that would like to write and honor their moms, you may just get one!  Gallery of Diamonds in Newport Beach, CA  has an annual contest entitled “Why Mom Deserves a Diamond”.  Students from grades 1 through 12 are eligible to submit an essay that are judged on the writer’s age and the creativity.

First prize is an unmounted 1/4 carat diamond valued at $500.  If you live in Orange County, California:

Entries must be submitted by mail or in person from your teacher on official entry forms by
January 17, 2008.

Michael Watson, the owner of Gallery of Diamonds, started the contest in 1993 to honor his adoptive mom and birth mom, whom he had searched for but never met.  Close to 250,000 kids have submitted essays over the years.
