SAT vs ACT:  The Differences (updated 2016)

LENGTH:

3 Hours (50 minute optional essay)

2 Hours, 55 Minutes (40 minute optional Writing Test)

SECTIONS:

4 Sections:  Reading, Writing,  Math (no calculator first), Math (with calculator), Optional Essay

4 Test Sections (5 with the optional Writing Test):  English, Math, Reading, Science, Writing (Optional), Experimental (sometimes added and clearly labeled)

CRITICAL READING (SAT)/READING (ACT):

Reading Comprehension passages and questions, and sentence completion questions – 52 questions in 65 minutes

Reading Comprehension passages and questions, and sentence completion questions – 40 questions in 35 minutes

MATH:

Math has 58 questions in 80 minutes

Math has 60 questions in 60 minutes

SCIENCE:

Science not included

Science has 40 questions in 35 minutes

ESSAY:

50 minute optional essay

40 minute optional writing essay

SCORING:

Total score out of 1600

Total composite score of 1-36 (based on average of 4 tests)  *4 scores of 1-36 for each test  *Score of 0-12 for the optional Writing Test

WRONG ANSWER PENALTY:

No wrong answer penalty
